Understanding Draw Length and Active Band Length
Draw Length is the distance from where your bands attach to your slingshot to your anchor point on your face when you're at full draw. This is your personal measurement and varies from shooter to shooter.
Active Band Length is the length of your bands from the attachment point to the pouch when the bands are at rest. This is the measurement you'll use to cut your bands.
The Golden Formula:Divide by 5 for balanced performance.
For optimal performance with most latex bands, your active band length should be your draw length divided by 5. This creates approximately 5x elongation, which is the sweet spot for balancing speed, power, and band longevity.
_Example: If your draw length is 30 inches, your active band length should be 6 inches (30 ÷ 5 = 6)._
How Elongation Affects Performance
Understanding elongation percentages helps you make informed decisions about your band setup:
400% (4x elongation):Very little power but maximum band life. Bands will last significantly longer but velocity will be reduced.
500% (5x elongation): The recommended sweet spot. Excellent balance of power and band longevity for most shooters.
600% (6x elongation):Fantastic speed and power but shortened band life. Best for competition shooting or when maximum velocity is the priority. If you shorten your active band length beyond the 5x factor, you'll see increased velocity at the expense of band life. Conversely, increasing your active band length will reduce speed but extend band longevity.
